What Is a Hindquarter Yield and Why is it so important?

A hindquarter yield is when the horse moves its hind end away from you (or your cue), crossing the inside hind leg in front of the outside hind leg.

It’s not just a fancy manoeuvre it’s one of the most fundamental control tools you can teach a horse.

💌 When done correctly, it teaches

• Respect for pressure

• Engagement of the hind end

• Softness and body control

• Mental focus and relaxation

💌 What it looks like

• The front feet stay relatively still or pivot slightly, while the hind feet step away and around. You’re asking the horse to untrack its hips and yield that power zone underneath them.

💌 Why it matters

• The hindquarters are the engine of the horse. If you can move the hindquarters, you can;

• Redirect energy (especially in spooky or bolty horses)
Disengage momentum safely

• Set up for canter departs, turns, spins, and more

• Reconnect a distracted or reactive horse to your aids

• A horse that won’t yield the hindquarters is a horse that hasn’t fully acknowledged the handler or rider’s leadership.

💌 How to teach it (on the ground)

- Stand at the horse’s shoulder, facing their hind end.

- Use your body language to direct energy toward the hindquarters (you can add pressure with a stick, rope, or flag behind the girth).

- As soon as the horse crosses the inside hind leg over the outside, release all pressure immediately.

- Repeat on both sides until they step under softly from light cues.

• Use outside leg slightly behind the girth to ask for the yield.

• Reinforce with your seat and inside rein if needed to guide the shoulders.

• Reward the instant the hindquarters step away, especially if they cross under.

Whether you’re working with a young one, re-training, or just getting your feet in the stirrups, these basics go a long way.

✅ 1. Consistency beats intensity.
You don’t need to spend hours every day just a few calm, consistent sessions a week can make all the difference.

✅ 2. Work on the basics daily.
Leading, tying, standing still, picking up feet these might seem simple, but they’re the foundation for everything else.

✅ 3. Pressure and release is your best tool.
Ask with pressure, release the second you get the right response. Horses learn from the release not the pressure itself.

✅ 4. Watch your energy.
Your horse reads your body language and mood before you even touch the lead rope. Stay calm, grounded, and confident even if you’re still learning!

✅ 5. Celebrate the small wins.
Did your horse walk off softly today? Stand calmly while tied? Respond to a light cue? That’s progress! 👏

What does it mean when a trainer says “move their feet”

When horse trainers or handlers say “move their feet,” they’re referring to getting the horse to engage mentally by using physical movement, often in a controlled and purposeful way. It’s not just about tiring them out it’s about regaining their focus and respect through movement.

What does it really mean?

“Moving their feet” in training or calming = making the horse respond to cues that involve physical movement, usually in a controlled pattern.

Why is it used ?

- Regains their attention
-When a horse is anxious, spooky, or trying to dominate
-Their mind isn’t with you.

Making them move (e.g., disengaging the hindquarters, changing direction, backing up) helps redirect their focus to you.

Establishes leadership

In herd dynamics, the horse that can make the other horses move is the leader. If you can move their feetcalmly and consistently you’re earning that leadership role in their mind.

Burns off mental tension, not just energy

It’s not about tiring them out. It’s about giving them a job to do when they’d otherwise be reactive or distracted.

Examples of “moving their feet”

- Yielding the hindquarters

- Backing up

- Sending them around you on a lunge or in a round yard

- Transitioning directions (changing eyes) while lunging

- Moving in and out of your personal space respectfully

How is it different from just “working” a horse?

“Working” can mean anything from flatwork, trail riding, lunging, to schooling patterns. It might be routine and not necessarily focused on communication.

“Moving their feet,” however, is intentional communication you’re asking for specific movements to engage the horse’s brain, redirect unwanted behaviour, or establish control.

When is it used most?

- When a horse is spooking or refusing

- When they’re being disrespectful or pushy

- When they’re anxious or trying to bolt

- When you need to reset the tone of a ride or groundwork session

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since starting FC, it’s that people are going to talk shit about you regardless. You’ll have enemies from years ago, people you thought were your friends sharing things and talking behind your back. But here’s the thing who cares?

The only people who have spoken badly about it are the ones who wish they could do it, the ones I cut off after they did me dirty, or the jealous ones who have nothing better to do than sit behind a screen and be a keyboard warrior. At the end of the day, their opinions don’t pay my bills, train my horses, or build my business… I do.

Success makes people uncomfortable, especially when they see someone doing what they wish they could. The best thing you can do is keep pushing forward, proving them wrong with your actions, and focusing on the people who genuinely support you.

The relationship between horse and rider is just solid proof that even though you’ll never share a conversation… actions speak a hell of a lot louder than words & I’d pick them over a human any day ⚡️

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately, and I just wanted to take a moment to address something that’s been on my mind.

Right now, there are some incredible horses out there, bred to the eyeballs and worth anywhere from $50K to $100K. And don’t get me wrong, I see the value in that. If you’re someone like Mark Buttsworth or Clinton Anderson, where these horses are your life and livelihood, it makes perfect sense. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with investing in top-tier, well-bred horses & I know plenty of people who do!

Bloodlines do matter when it comes to reliability, making sure they’re surefooted & structurally correct but there are still plenty good horses out there that tick all those boxes & don’t cost you thousands of $. At the end of the day, they’re still just a horse.

Some of the best horses I’ve ridden weren’t the ones with big price tags or fancy bloodlines. They were honest, sure-footed, and reliable the kind that could chase down a beast, work all day mustering, cut out if we needed them to and still be turned out for weeks without missing a beat. They had exposure beyond just the inside of an arena, and personally, I believe that is what makes a great horse. I’m all for breeding quality horses with speed and agility, and I love taking them to the odd draft or challenge. But I won’t be spending $50K+ on a horse just for mustering or to take to the odd draft here and there, my lifestyle & what I do doesn’t suit that! You don’t have to spend ridiculous amounts of money for a well bred horse!

Some people are in this game for the money and titles and that’s fine, but for me? I break in horses because I love it & the results at the end, being able to look back & see a completed horse is a great feeling or even just being able to see a clients dreams for their horse come true is enough of a win for me. I draft because I enjoy it not for the titles or fame!

So if you ask me how many I’ve won, I probably won’t answer you. You shouldn’t question a person ability to train & educate a horse based off how many titles they’ve won. You’ll see their ability through the horses they work with & the noticeable changes they get at the end of the day

Another beautiful Clearview Brumby from Deb Darcy Martin headed home this week. These horses have shown such gentle, willing natures, taking everything in stride. I love working with these horses, and it’s amazing to see the difference that rescuing can make. They’re fantastic for kids’ ponies and mustering horses, tough as nails and always giving 110%. It’s always hard seeing them head home but the FC team had so much fun shaping Ruby into the ideal kids’ pony 🩷

⚡️Tip of the day⚡️

Have your breakers work in different surroundings every session, don’t make everyday the same! For this particular breaker he’s being trained to become a kids pony down the track. He’s been worked in round yards, square yards, paddocks, swam through dams, had bags flapping off him from his head to his tail, ridden bareback, saddled and by multiple riders don’t let them get used to just one person!

Introduce them to absolutely anything & everything, trust me it will pay off down the road.
